Yamaha is moving ahead with development of its 2027 MotoGP machine, but the new 850cc prototype is not simply an incremental step from the current V4. Augusto Fernandez describes it as completely different from the present 1000cc bike, making adaptation a substantial task for the riders.

The change extends beyond the engine. Fernandez points to the switch from the current Michelin tyres to Pirelli, as well as the ride-height devices that will form part of the new package. Taken together, those changes make the prototype feel so unfamiliar to him that he compares the experience to almost changing brands.

Development programme

Two tests have so far taken place with the 2027 machines and Pirelli tyres, involving MotoGP riders. Yamaha is now working to finalise the package for Valencia and establish the work that its Japanese team will undertake over the winter. Official lap times are expected at December’s Valencia test, which should provide the first clear reference point for the performance of the new combination.

Fernandez is handling both racing and testing duties. He has replaced injured Pramac Yamaha rider Toprak Razgatlioglu for the remaining rounds of the season, while continuing development work on the 850cc machine alongside Andrea Dovizioso. Fernandez says he wants to make the most of his racing opportunity through the end of the year, but considers the testing work more important.

From Phillip Island to Sepang

At Phillip Island, Fernandez qualified 17th in wet conditions, ahead of Alex Rins, Fabio Quartararo and Franco Morbidelli. He finished last in the dry Sprint, and his position remained unchanged after a tyre-pressure penalty. The next stop is Sepang, a circuit Fernandez knows from Yamaha testing and from his two full MotoGP seasons with Tech3 KTM.
