Maverick Viñales returns to MotoGP at Motegi
Tech3 KTM has confirmed the Spaniard’s comeback for the Japanese Grand Prix after four rounds out with a shoulder injury.

Maverick Viñales is set to return to MotoGP competition at the Japanese Grand Prix, with Tech3 KTM confirming his place at Motegi. The 10-time premier-class race winner will ride again after missing the four preceding rounds at Silverstone, Aragón, Misano and the Red Bull Ring. It will be his first appearance since the summer break.
The absence began when Viñales retired from the German Grand Prix in July. An undiagnosed tear was subsequently found in his shoulder, and Pol Espargaró was appointed to replace him in each of the next four races. Viñales is also due to leave MotoGP at the end of the 2026 season, making the remaining part of his campaign especially significant.
Viñales has said that he is not yet back to 100 per cent, although he feels ready to take the next step. His approach at Motegi will be gradual: checking his physical condition and recovering his connection with the motorcycle rather than demanding a full race pace immediately. He also thanked the Red Bull APC and his doctors for their work and support during his recovery.
MotoGP will move on to Mandalika in Indonesia after Japan for round 17 of the season. The Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island is scheduled for October 23–25 and is described as the final Australian Grand Prix to be held there. The last four rounds are set to take place at Sepang, Lusail, Portimão and Valencia.
