Moto Guzzi presented the new form of its historic Mandello del Lario headquarters on 2 September 2026. The project took almost five years and involved an investment of more than €50 million, turning the site into a combination of manufacturing facility, museum and multi-purpose destination for the brand’s visitors. The headquarters has not moved: it remains where Moto Guzzi was founded in 1921, on the Lecco side of Lake Como.

The new complex was designed and engineered by a team led by architect Greg Lynn. Its purpose goes beyond either refurbishing a factory or adding an exhibition building. Production, heritage and public access are arranged within the same industrial perimeter, giving Mandello a combined role as a workplace, cultural venue and visitor experience.

More capacity, new production lines

The expansion adds 5,500 square metres of new industrial buildings and 380 square metres of new office space. Total factory area now reaches 38,000 square metres, while production capacity rises to more than 30,000 vehicles a year. These figures come with a redesigned production flow rather than a purely cosmetic update to the existing site.

The engine assembly lines are automated and installed in a completely new facility. Final motorcycle assembly is connected to the engine shop by a fully robotised conveyor system. At the end of the line, the motorcycles are handed over to kilo ground drones from Piaggio Fast Forward. Designed and manufactured in Boston, the drones take the bikes to final testing. The project description says the arrangement reduces the physical demands on workers and improves safety throughout the production flow.

The new facility also places emphasis on efficient resource use. It includes 1,300 square metres of photovoltaic panels, makes extensive use of natural light and is built to Class A standards. At the same time, the distinctive red gate on Via Parodi remains in place. It has served as an entrance for Moto Guzzi technicians, workers, engineers and riders since 1921, providing a visible link between the new technology and the continuity of the historic headquarters.

A museum beside the assembly lines

A new museum occupies a 3,000-square-metre building next to the factory. Its architecture draws on the metallic and technical aesthetic of the motorcycles made in Mandello, creating a visual and material connection between the building and the brand. The collection contains more than 160 meticulously restored two-wheelers, from the G.P.—the unique world prototype associated with the beginning of Moto Guzzi’s story—to current production models.

The display also includes legendary models and racing motorcycles that won 14 MotoGP World Championship titles. Themed sections cover cinema, racing, travel, the arts, and military and police vehicles. The museum therefore uses Moto Guzzi’s motorcycles to tell a story of more than a century of social, cultural, technological and design change, rather than presenting a simple chronological line-up of machines.

The connection with the present is practical as well as symbolic. Museum visitors will have a direct view of the completely new assembly lines and will be able to follow the production process for new motorcycles. Heritage and current manufacturing are consequently placed within the same visitor route instead of being treated as separate stories.

More space for visitors

The project adds more than 4,200 square metres of new multi-purpose space. This includes the Motoplex Store, a café, areas for workshops and events, and a new auditorium. Outside, pedestrianised areas contain two tree-lined squares, a promenade with views of the factory in operation, the restored Galleria del Vento wind tunnel, and a raised terrace overlooking the central piazza and the monumental Moto Guzzi eagle mosaic.

All these areas remain within the original factory perimeter and have been designed to welcome visitors from around the world throughout the year. Mandello therefore takes on a role broader than that of a manufacturing site, bringing together industry, exhibition space, events and everyday contact with the brand. The new phase begins alongside the Moto Guzzi World Days, scheduled in Mandello from 3 to 6 September 2026.
