Marquez earns Qatar MotoGP title match point
Victory in the Sprint gives Marc Marquez his first chance to clinch the title, but he expects a difficult Grand Prix.
Marc Marquez moved the 2026 MotoGP championship to a possible Sunday conclusion by winning the Qatar Sprint. Jorge Martin’s third place created Marquez’s first opportunity to secure the title, although the result does not make the Grand Prix a formality for the Ducati rider.
The immediate calculation is clear: Marquez must win the Grand Prix while Martin scores no points. Marquez himself struck a cautious tone, saying he does not have the pace required for victory and expecting a very difficult race. He also identified Aprilia’s speed over longer race distances as a major threat. His message after the Sprint was that this was not the moment to take such a risk.
Bezzecchi’s crash reshapes the Sprint
Marco Bezzecchi started from pole as the pre-race favourite, but the Italian left the Sprint without points. An attempt to pass Marquez at Turn 1 ended with contact and a crash. Marquez had selected a soft rear tyre for the shorter race; on Sunday, he will face Bezzecchi with the medium. The incident deployed Marquez’s airbag and left him struggling through several corners.
With Bezzecchi out of the immediate fight, injured title rival Martin unexpectedly appeared at the front and briefly attacked Marquez at Turn 6. Marquez regained the position, while Martin later surrendered second place to Fabio di Giannantonio. Bezzecchi still has a mathematical route forward, but he must score five more points than Marquez in the Grand Prix to remain in contention. Once Qatar is over, no more than 74 points will remain across the Portimao and Valencia rounds.
