Jorge Martin finished third in the Qatar MotoGP sprint after turning an 11th-place start into a podium through an aggressive tyre decision. When the race was stopped, the Aprilia rider abandoned the medium rear tyre and selected the soft option, despite that choice running against Aprilia’s direction. The gamble gave him the braking performance needed to move back through the field quickly, while he was also trying to keep his MotoGP title hopes alive.

The restart that changed Martin’s race

The sprint was halted on lap two following Pecco Bagnaia’s crash, creating the opportunity to alter the bikes before the restart. Martin said the soft rear transformed his confidence under braking. He could attack more forcefully, pass several riders and even take the lead for a corner, running ahead of Marc Marquez during the early phase of the restarted race.

The decision became harder to sustain as the finish approached. The soft tyre began to lose performance, while Martin acknowledged that he was not in his best physical condition. Fabio Di Giannantonio of VR46 Ducati used the fading pace to pass him for second. Martin tried to defend to the flag, but he did not have enough drive to launch a counterattack and settled for third.

A podium two weeks after a wrist fracture

Martin’s Qatar result came only two weeks after he fractured his right wrist in a crash during the Phillip Island sprint. He said he had fought to recover as well as possible and described himself as a “tough guy”. His physical condition left no more to give, but he still considered the soft-tyre call the correct one. Martin called the choice a major gamble and said the final two laps were at the limit. The podium therefore reflected both the speed unlocked by the tyre and the effort required to preserve it until the finish.
