Classicbike-Raisch has created the R12 G/S Sumo, a supermoto-oriented version of BMW’s retro adventure motorcycle. The build revisits an idea BMW explored with the HP2 Megamoto and G650 XMoto, but applies it to the current R12 G/S with a strong emphasis on road use rather than adventure riding.

17-inch conversion

The central change is a set of wide 17-inch Kineo rims, giving the G/S a more compact road-focused stance. Classicbike-Raisch has also fitted a different exhaust system, Motogadget electronics, a tail tidy and a heavy-duty sump guard. The conversion includes a new headlight cowl, crash bars, replacement levers, bar-end mirrors and uprated petal-shaped brake discs.

The example shown uses a stealthy matt-black finish, while other colour choices are available, including Dakar-spec khaki. The underlying motorcycle remains mechanically as it left the BMW factory, apart from a minor reduction in weight. The free-flowing exhaust may also provide a little extra performance, though that suggestion is not presented as a confirmed output increase.

A costly route to road fun

The finished R12 G/S Sumo is quoted at approximately 109bhp and around 229kg wet. Classicbike-Raisch charges €10,000 (£8,400) for the conversion, with the donor motorcycle required in addition. In Germany, the standard BMW R12 G/S is priced at €16,990, or approximately £14,400.

That makes the Sumo a substantial investment on top of the base bike, but the result has a clear purpose: it keeps the R12 G/S’s retro-adventure identity while redirecting the package towards uncomplicated, fast road riding. It also keeps alive the supermoto direction associated with BMW’s earlier HP2 Megamoto and G650 XMoto.
