Marquez takes Qatar second with a tyre-saving strategy
Marc Marquez protected the front tyre early, recovered to second and finished the Qatar MotoGP race physically spent.
Marc Marquez finished second in the Qatar Grand Prix after choosing tyre management over an early attempt to match the pace at the front. The Ducati Lenovo Team rider started from second, slipped as low as fourth while Marco Bezzecchi and Raul Fernandez pulled away, and recovered the runner-up position late in the race. He caught Fernandez in the closing stages, while Pedro Acosta had already dropped into traffic deliberately after tyre-pressure problems affected his race.
Why the front tyre came first
Marquez had made the decision before the start not to chase Bezzecchi immediately. His concern was the right side of the front tyre: pushing in the opening three or four laps could damage it and leave him struggling for the rest of the race. He therefore accepted a loss of 1.5 to 2 seconds at the beginning in exchange for keeping the tyre in better shape over the following 15 laps.
That approach also reflected the pace Bezzecchi had shown in Practice. Marquez felt he could stay with him for a few laps, but not for all 22 laps without taking too much additional risk. The plan was consequently built around patience: protect the front tyre early, preserve a usable race pace and wait for the later phase before pushing harder. It brought Marquez back into contention for second as the race developed.
A physical price for the result
The recovery came at a significant physical cost. Speaking after the finish, Marquez said he was “completely exhausted” and empty of energy, while stressing that the tiredness was physical rather than mental. He described his mental condition as better than ever. The Qatar weekend had effectively involved three races in succession, and he explained that he had already been limiting his effort on Friday and had gone out later in the Warm Up to preserve energy for the main event.
Marquez increased the pressure again over the final two laps, accepting extra risk because he might need the four points. He identified the overall points haul from the Qatar weekend as the most important outcome, particularly because a strong weekend prevents his championship rivals from gaining further momentum. The next step is recovery and preparation for Portimao: Marquez said he intends to go home, remain focused and follow a simple “train, eat, sleep, repeat” routine until the next round.
