Marc Marquez won the Sepang MotoGP Grand Prix for his seventh victory of the 2026 season, extending his advantage at a decisive point in the championship. He led every lap and reached the chequered flag more than four seconds clear, producing one of the year’s most commanding performances without relying on a late-race recovery. The result was also his third premier-class win at the Malaysian circuit and his first there since 2018.

After Sepang, Marquez held a 44-point lead over Jorge Martin and a 67-point advantage over Marco Bezzecchi. Martin missed the race because of injury, while Bezzecchi did not have the performance needed to put pressure on the winner. That left the Qatar round as a possible championship-clinching opportunity, provided the required combination of results falls into place.

Why tyre management mattered

Gigi Dall’Igna focused on both the timing of the victory and the quality of its execution. The Ducati Corse general manager said the race was considerably harder than the final margin suggested: Sepang’s layout and temperatures placed heavy demands on the rear tyre. Marquez gradually increased the gap, maintained a pace his rivals could not match and avoided the kind of mistake that could have turned a comfortable-looking result into a much closer finish.

Ducati also collected a significant result behind its factory rider. Alex Marquez finished third for Gresini, bringing important points to Ducati’s constructors’ campaign. He had missed out on the Saturday Sprint after crashing, but produced a determined Grand Prix performance, absorbing repeated counter-attacks and finding enough pace in the closing laps to secure the podium.

Alex’s result carried additional weight because he was racing with a compromised physical condition and was expected to undergo surgery during the same week. For Marc Marquez, the Sepang victory was also the 80th of his MotoGP career. It gave him a substantial cushion before Qatar and underlined how effectively he converted a weekend in which one of his main title rivals was absent into a major championship gain.
