Márquez takes control of the MotoGP title fight at Sepang
His seventh win of 2026 put him 44 points clear and opened a path to a 10th world title in Portugal.

Marc Márquez won the Malaysian Grand Prix and turned the MotoGP championship battle into one he now controls. His seventh Grand Prix victory of the 2026 season moved him to the top of the standings, 44 points ahead of Jorge Martin. The next round is in Portugal, where Márquez can secure his eighth premier-class crown and his 10th world title across all classes.
Martin was absent at Sepang after suffering a wrist injury at the preceding round in Australia. Márquez converted that opening into 34 points from the Malaysian Grand Prix. To become champion in Portugal, he must arrive with a lead of at least 74 points over Martin and at least 75 over Marco Bezzecchi.
From recovery to adaptation
The scale of the turnaround is clearer when set against Márquez’s starting point. He returned at the Italian Grand Prix in late May after surgery on his left foot and right shoulder. At that stage, he was more than 100 points behind the championship leader. His physical condition also limited his ability to extract maximum performance in some situations.
Márquez has identified his long-standing urge to exploit every opportunity and leave nothing for his rivals as a personal “weak point”. He explained that the second half of the season demanded more than continued recovery: it required adaptation. The key adjustment was learning to control his racing instincts and accept that his performance would not be identical at every circuit.
Choosing attack in Malaysia
At Sepang, Márquez deliberately took a different approach. Whereas he had often conserved energy for the race earlier in the season, this time he pushed from the opening phase of FP1 and committed fully. Martin’s absence created a major championship opportunity, but Márquez still had to turn it into a result on track. The victory and the 34 points gave the Ducati Lenovo Team rider a clear advantage as the season moves on.
Márquez is not treating the gap as a reason to ease off. He has said he will maintain the same mentality until the championship is decided, with many points still available. He also expects Bezzecchi to be particularly strong in Qatar and Portimao, two rounds he regards as generally favourable for his rival. Portugal can complete Márquez’s route to the title, but only if the required points margins are reached.
