Yamaha pulls out of Qatar as MotoGP warns of consequences
The factory team is staying away under Yamaha’s travel policy, while the FIM will handle the sporting fallout under championship rules.

Yamaha will not send its factory team to the Qatar Grand Prix, keeping its corporate travel policy restricting trips to the Middle East in force. The decision followed a letter to MotoGP signed by 19 riders, who reiterated their opposition to racing in Qatar amid concerns that the conflict in the region could escalate.
MotoGP said it was disappointed by Yamaha’s choice, while acknowledging that the manufacturer is bound by a broader corporate policy. The championship says it consulted the State of Qatar, Lusail International Circuit and independent safety advisers, alongside its own continuing risk assessment. Its position is that the race plan does not need to change, and that the remaining teams have confirmed they will compete.
The regulatory fallout
Yamaha’s withdrawal creates both contractual and sporting consequences. MotoGP pointed to the manufacturer’s agreements with MotoGP and IRTA on the contractual side. The sporting element will be handled by the FIM under the championship regulations. Possible sanctions affecting the Portuguese and Valencia Grands Prix have been reported, but the FIM has not officially commented on those specific penalties.
It is also still unclear whether Yamaha’s decision extends to Pramac. That appears possible because the team’s riders are contracted to the manufacturer, but Yamaha has not clarified the point. The move was not entirely unexpected: Alex Rins had said earlier that Yamaha had yet to decide whether it would race in Qatar.
Japanese government travel advice for Qatar warns against all but essential journeys. Marc Marquez and Pedro Acosta have said they plan to arrive as late as possible as a precaution. MotoGP nevertheless maintains that the event will go ahead with the rest of the grid.
