Iker Lecuona turned Cremona’s opening WorldSBK race into a controlled victory, beating Nicolo Bulega by more than five seconds in Race 1 at the 10th round of the 2026 season. The result was Lecuona’s second win of the year, but it did not change the central championship picture: Bulega remains at the head of the riders’ standings.

Bulega arrived at Cremona having been beaten only once in 2026 before this race. He now has to wait again to secure the title. To achieve that in Race 1, he would have needed to outscore Lecuona by 15 points, so the Italian missed a second opportunity to close out the championship. Sunday still brings two more races, and Lecuona believes his rival can find a different approach when the pressure increases.

“Nicolo always finds something,” Lecuona said after the race. He expects Bulega might push harder, adding that the two riders would be ready to fight if that happened. The sizeable gap at the finish therefore did not persuade Lecuona that the weekend’s competitive balance was settled.

Speed built gradually

Lecuona’s race was shaped by patience rather than an aggressive opening burst. He described his launch as one of his worst of the season, although he still led through Turns 1 and 2. His first lap was approximately 1m28.9s, by his estimation, after which he increased his speed progressively rather than trying to force the pace immediately.

That approach continued until the front tyre lost some grip around the middle of the race. By then, Lecuona had created enough space to ride with more comfort and retain room for an error without surrendering speed. He said he was even able to go faster once the gap had been established, while praising both his own riding and the team’s work on the motorcycle.

The closest scare came around half-distance, between Turns 7 and 8. Lecuona explained that he picked the bike up too quickly while applying full throttle during the change of direction. The front tyre touched down after a wheelie, producing a pronounced headshake. He did not lose time, however, and said he had sufficient feel to resolve the moment and recover the pace in another sector because he held an advantage across the lap.

Championship picture after Race 1

Lecuona’s second victory did little to transform his own title position, although he is now almost 200 points clear of Yari Montella in the battle for third. Montella crashed twice in Race 1 and scored no points, reducing his advantage over Sam Lowes to 33 points. Lowes finished third and moved back ahead of Alex Lowes, who took sixth. Bulega’s lead remains intact, but Sunday’s two races give him another chance to respond on track—and another opportunity to finish the job in the championship.
