Fatima pilgrimage draws around 170,000 motorcyclists
Portugal’s 11th Blessing of the Helmets brought riders together for worship, remembrance and a road-safety message.

Around 170,000 motorcyclists gathered in Fatima on Sunday, 20 September, for Portugal’s 11th Blessing of the Helmets pilgrimage. The event centred on Cova da Iria, within the Sanctuary of Fatima, and attracted riders from across Portugal as well as many participants from abroad, according to MotorBike.gr.
The gathering combined Christian worship with the traditions of the motorcycling community. Riders celebrated their shared passion for motorcycles, met new people and renewed friendships, while also remembering those who had lost their lives. The attendance estimate came from official bodies, including the Sanctuary administration, together with information from the organising Bênção dos Capacetes association.
Faith, remembrance and safer riding
The ceremony was attended by several officials, including ministers, and was presided over by the Patriarch of Lisbon. Motorcyclists took part in different stages of the programme, which opened with a message from Pope Francis. He highlighted fraternity, prudence and respect for life, urging riders to apply those values in their everyday lives.
The papal message also emphasised the importance of a culture of prevention and road safety. It concluded with an apostolic blessing for the motorcyclists, their families, the pilgrimage organisers and the volunteers involved in the event. The ceremony then reached its traditional central moment: the blessing of the participants’ helmets and motorcycle keys.
The celebration was not limited to mainland Portugal. The Blessing of the Helmets also took place in the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores. In Madeira, gatherings were held at Machico and Campo de São Francisco; organisers estimated that more than 2,000 motorcyclists participated there. These parallel events extended the pilgrimage’s combination of motorcycle culture, Christian faith and remembrance to Portugal’s Atlantic regions.
