Kawasaki is expanding its KLE500 adventure range for 2027 with the KLE500 SE Smartride. Its self-engaging clutch allows the motorcycle to pull away and come to a halt without the rider operating the clutch lever. Gear changes remain conventional, however: the rider still uses the left-foot shifter and clutch lever when selecting another ratio.

The arrangement places a compact mechanical centrifugal clutch inside a conventional clutch assembly. Kawasaki says the system is intended to reduce clutch-lever work at low speed, where repeated control of the lever is most demanding, while preserving the normal manual gearbox. It therefore targets easier starts, stops and slow manoeuvres rather than turning the KLE500 into an automatic motorcycle.

Revised wheels and equipment

The Smartride joins the standard and SE versions of the KLE500 with tubeless tyres and a larger rear fitment. The rear tyre measures 150/70 x 17, replacing the existing 140/70 x 17 specification. Power comes from the same 451cc parallel-twin engine, quoted at 44.8bhp at 9000pm and 31.4lb.ft at 6000rpm.

The new variant is expected to arrive from January 2027 in Pearl Blizzard White. It can also be configured in Rally, Adventure Tourer and Urban trim levels, with options such as crash bars and luggage. Pricing remains unconfirmed. The model’s clutch technology places it in the same broad conversation as the BMW F450GS Easy Ride Clutch and Honda NX500 E-Clutch, although the KLE500 continues to use a conventional gear lever.

Kawasaki will show the KLE500 SE Smartride at Motorcycle Live in Birmingham, hosted at the National Exhibition Centre from November 21 to 29. The new system gives the KLE500 a mechanical alternative to the electronic or assisted clutch solutions appearing elsewhere in the middleweight motorcycle segment, while keeping the rider’s usual control over gear selection.
