Kawasaki is expanding the 2027 KLE 500 range with the SE Smartride, a version that changes how the clutch is managed at low speed. Its new system is intended to reduce clutch-lever work during repeated pullaways and stops, a potentially useful feature in urban traffic.

The arrangement uses a centrifugal mechanism alongside the conventional clutch. Kawasaki says the rider can set off from a standstill and bring the motorcycle to a stop without operating the clutch lever. Smartride is mechanical rather than electronically controlled, and does not use electric motors, giving the system a simpler operating principle than more elaborate automated solutions.

Manual gear changes remain

This is not a conversion to an automatic gearbox. Gear selection remains the rider’s responsibility, using the clutch lever and the shift lever in the usual way. The Smartride system is therefore aimed mainly at the two ends of low-speed travel, where repeated clutch operation is most noticeable: moving away and coming to a halt.

The SE Smartride will also be fitted with tubeless tyres. Kawasaki associates the version with a white colour scheme, while arrival timing and pricing have yet to accompany the presentation.
