Zarco escapes Turn 4 knee scare in Austria
The LCR Honda rider reported no further damage after his gravel-track fall, while Diogo Moreira was cleared over a second incident at the corner.

Johann Zarco’s return from a serious knee injury faced an immediate test during Friday afternoon practice at the Austrian MotoGP. The LCR Honda rider lost the bike’s line at Turn 4 after a high-speed wobble, crossed onto the gravel and tried to keep it upright with his feet before falling.
The moment mattered because Zarco has only just resumed racing following more than 100 days away with ligament damage to his left knee. That injury happened in Catalunya: after a crash on the restart, his leg became caught in Pecco Bagnaia’s rear wheel. Zarco said the twisting movement during Friday’s fall made him worry about pain or further injury, but he reported that the knee was not damaged again.
A second incident came shortly afterwards, when team-mate Diogo Moreira entered the same gravel area and narrowly missed Zarco. Moreira said he was already on the brakes but could not bring the bike to a stop while trying a different setup. He also reported seeing no yellow flags, only a marshal running. The FIM MotoGP Stewards decided that Moreira was not at fault and took no further action.
Why Turn 4 proved costly
Zarco linked the repeated excursions to the corner’s steep downhill approach. Riders can try to carry slightly more speed into the turn without braking much later, he explained, but the extra momentum can quickly exceed the available margin.
The gravel excursion was not the only setback in Zarco’s session. He narrowly missed direct passage to Q2 despite ending within half a second of pace-setter Pedro Acosta. Zarco said his final time attack was progressing at a qualifying pace, but tension in the last sector prevented the improvement he needed. Luca Marini was 0.044 seconds ahead of Zarco as Honda’s fastest rider, although Marini also remained outside the top-ten cut. Moreira finished the session 13th, immediately behind Zarco.
