VR46: Bulega’s Pirelli edge is not an excessive advantage
Uccio Salucci sees Nicolo Bulega’s tyre experience as useful, but not sufficient on its own to explain his VR46 deal.

Nicolo Bulega’s experience with MotoGP’s new Pirelli tyres should help him in 2027, but VR46 does not regard it as a decisive advantage. Uccio Salucci says the knowledge was a positive factor, rather than the sole reason the team signed the newly crowned World Superbike champion.
Bulega has been an important part of Ducati’s 850cc testing programme ahead of the 2027 regulation change. That makes him the most experienced rider contracted for next season when it comes to the new Pirelli rubber. KTM test rider Pol Espargaro has suggested that the familiarity could allow Bulega to stand out from the opening race.
Salucci’s counterpoint is that current MotoGP riders can adapt quickly. In his estimation, a rider at this level needs roughly two hours to understand the behaviour of the Pirelli tyres. Bulega’s background is therefore an advantage, but not one large enough to explain his move to VR46 by itself.
The upgrade battle
The more consequential question for VR46 concerns technical support during the season. Bulega is contracted to VR46, while teammate Fermin Aldeguer has a direct Ducati agreement and will have factory status. Aldeguer is consequently expected to receive new parts sooner. Every Ducati rider is expected to begin 2027 with the same bike specification, although the new regulation cycle could slow the arrival of updates for satellite teams.
Ducati and VR46 remain open to keeping Bulega’s bike current if the team demonstrates that it merits the support. Salucci wants to judge the situation after the first five or six races. He is also concerned that the gap between factory and non-factory Ducati machines could become substantial, especially from the middle of the season onwards.
