Maverick Vinales produced his best day on track in MotoGP since returning to racing at Motegi during Friday’s action in Malaysia. The Red Bull KTM Tech3 rider finished Practice inside the top 10, securing direct passage to Q2 alongside fellow KTM riders Enea Bastianini and Pedro Acosta. The speed is encouraging, but the weekend remains governed by how much work his shoulder can tolerate.

Vinales plans to try to complete the entire weekend, yet he has already set a clear condition for the Sprint. If the shoulder begins hurting more, he will reduce his energy expenditure and preserve his physical condition for Sunday’s main race. Acceleration still causes some pain, although he says it is much lower than it was in Australia. For Saturday, he hopes simply to maintain the same level of discomfort he experienced on Friday rather than risk undoing the progress made so far.

The rider also made clear that extracting performance from the KTM requires a significant physical commitment. In his assessment, the bike only works when it is pushed to the limit, meaning that merely circulating is not enough. He expects his performance to improve as soon as the shoulder allows him to demand more from the motorcycle, but that leaves little room for a cautious riding style if he wants to exploit the available pace.

Vinales said Sepang itself and the treatment he has followed since Phillip Island have both helped him arrive in better shape. The treatment is relieving the pain, and the reduction gives him more strength. His objective is to reach the Portimao and Valencia races without pain, because the difference is substantial: when the shoulder hurts, he can lift 5kg, compared with 12kg without pain. The gap becomes even larger in the extreme positions required on the motorcycle. He particularly notices a different riding position on the left side, while pain in the small muscles involved can reduce his strength almost completely. That makes the Sepang Sprint a physical assessment as much as a race: Vinales must determine whether the shoulder can withstand maximum effort without compromising Sunday.
