Viñales changed Sepang plan after seeing wet-weather bike
The Red Bull KTM Tech3 rider intended to end his Sprint effort to conserve energy, but rain sent him back onto the track.

Maverick Viñales did not enter the pits during the Sepang MotoGP Sprint with a bike change as his original objective. After first trying to find a rhythm and assess the motorcycle ahead of the Grand Prix, he planned to end his effort and preserve energy for Sunday. The decision reflected his physical condition, despite a strong Friday for speed and a top-10 finish in MotoGP Practice.
The situation changed in pit lane. Viñales saw his second motorcycle prepared for wet conditions and, with rain beginning to fall, chose to return to the circuit. The move produced no sporting advantage because the rain arrived too late to justify the switch for either Viñales or the other riders who changed bikes. He said the rainfall became dramatically heavier after the chequered flag had fallen.
The Sprint also added to Viñales’ recovery workload. The Red Bull KTM Tech3 rider said he had significantly less strength in his arm on Saturday than on Friday and needed substantial recovery to rebuild his muscles. Two consecutive race weekends are particularly demanding for him, while he stressed that the motorcycle he rode requires considerable physical strength. MotoGP is scheduled to continue next week at Lusail for the Qatar Grand Prix.
