Joan Mir believes Marc Marquez has turned this year’s championship fight into a test of pressure management for his rivals. After the Malaysian Sprint, the 2020 MotoGP champion said Marquez remains fully focused on what he needs to do and is avoiding mistakes. Mir’s assessment is that the other contenders are struggling to withstand the pressure Marquez is creating.

The recent results explain why the balance of the fight has shifted. Marquez finished second at Sepang, one place ahead of Marco Bezzecchi, and now holds a 52-point advantage over the Aprilia rider. That is a sharp reversal from the spring, when Marquez was more than 100 points off the championship lead after the Italian Grand Prix. He is now moving towards a 10th world title and an eighth in MotoGP.

Jorge Martin is 19 points behind Marquez but will not race the following day. Martin fractured his wrist in a crash during the Phillip Island Sprint while battling Marquez. Four Grands Prix and three Sprints remain after the Malaysian Sprint, so the championship still has several scoring opportunities ahead, even with the current gap at the top.

Mir’s rain gamble

Mir tried to change the course of his own Sprint with a high-risk strategy. Running in the midfield, he saw the sky darken and rain begin at Turn 4, then changed bikes in anticipation of heavier conditions. The rain ultimately became significant only on the final lap, after the leaders had already crossed the finish line for the last time. The Honda HRC rider’s gamble therefore brought no benefit. Mir acknowledged that the timing was wrong, while pointing out how difficult such calls are to predict when the weather is changing.
