Qatar MotoGP: Rider absences threaten Marquez’s title match point
Marc Marquez needs a win and zero points for Jorge Martin, but the grid could shrink to 15 riders in Qatar.
Marc Marquez reaches his first 2026 MotoGP title match point in Qatar, but the depleted field could make an immediate championship victory harder to achieve. The Ducati rider won Saturday’s sprint at Lusail, with Aprilia’s Jorge Martin taking third. Marquez will be crowned on Sunday only if he wins the Grand Prix and Martin scores no points. That combination would settle the championship with two rounds remaining and deliver Marquez an eighth world title.
The Qatar field is getting smaller
Eighteen riders took part in the Qatar weekend after Yamaha withdrew both of its teams because of security concerns surrounding racing in the Gulf region. Honda filled the unwell Joan Mir’s seat with Jake Dixon, while Gresini brought in Iker Lecuona to replace Alex Marquez alongside Fermin Aldeguer.
Pecco Bagnaia’s foot injury in the sprint cut the expected Sunday starting field to 17 riders. It could fall to 15 before the race. Tech3 KTM’s Maverick Vinales, 15th in the sprint, is considering pulling out as pain continues in his injured shoulder. Luca Marini is another doubt, with illness still affecting his physical condition.
Why the numbers matter
Should only 15 riders start and all reach the chequered flag, every finisher will score at least one point. That leaves Martin needing only 15th place to keep his championship challenge alive if Marquez wins. The prospect is especially significant because Martin completed the sprint with a fractured wrist, while the longer Grand Prix distance is likely to place a greater physical demand on him.
Marquez himself does not expect to seal the championship in Qatar, saying he does not believe his pace matches that of pole-sitter Marco Bezzecchi. The decisive condition remains simple: if Marquez does not win the race, he cannot become champion on Sunday, regardless of Martin’s result.
