Pramac timing leaves Miller’s Sepang gamble stranded
Jack Miller pitted for a wet-weather bike on the opening lap, but Pramac Yamaha was not ready when he arrived.

Jack Miller committed to an early wet-weather gamble in the Sepang Sprint, entering pit lane after the opening lap as the first raindrops appeared. He had seen drops through Turns 5 and 6, then again through Turns 7 and 8 and Turns 9 and 10, and judged that the next lap would be wet. The radar pointed to rain arriving later, but the changing conditions convinced the Pramac Yamaha rider that the shift had begun ahead of schedule.
The call immediately ran into a practical problem: the spare M1 was not ready when Miller arrived. Its tyres had not yet been changed, leaving him waiting in pit lane and conceding that his race was over. Rain did become heavier, but the downpour needed to turn the gamble into a winning strategy arrived only after the chequered flag.
A misunderstanding over preparation time
Miller said the second bike had been discussed before the start, but rider and team had taken different meanings from that conversation. He expected the machine to be available immediately; the crew had understood that it still had four or five laps in which to prepare it. Miller accepted responsibility for choosing to pit, believing the risk was justified by the conditions and his position in the race, and later apologised to Pramac for his reaction during the delay.
Team director Gino Borsoi described it as shared responsibility rather than a one-sided failure. Pramac was preparing the Yamaha for wet conditions and, in Borsoi’s assessment, it would have been ready a lap later. He also felt Miller moved too quickly after encountering the heaviest rain in one section of the circuit, while the team could have completed its preparation slightly faster. The key error was therefore the timing: both sides were acting on a different expectation of when the bike would be usable.
Joan Mir, Iker Lecuona, Franco Morbidelli and Maverick Viñales also came into the pits as the rain intensified. Augusto Fernandez, substituting for the injured Toprak Razgatlioglu, finished 14th. Rain could again influence Sunday’s Grand Prix, making the readiness of the second bike and precise communication between rider and pit wall important parts of Pramac’s race planning.
