Marini explains why Honda needed the soft rear tyre at Misano
The 13-lap Sprint highlighted how rear-tyre strategy depends on each manufacturer’s available grip, not simply on race distance.

The Misano MotoGP Sprint exposed a clear difference between manufacturers in available rear grip. Luca Marini said that contrast shaped the tyre choices: Marc Marquez won the 13-lap half-distance race with the medium rear, while Marini and most riders used the soft compound.
Why the medium worked for Marquez
Marquez said crashes involving Ducati riders in qualifying influenced his decision to choose the medium rear. The additional grip from the soft compound was described as capable of overloading the front tyre, making the harder option a more attractive choice for a motorcycle with greater available grip.
The medium rear can offer more stability on corner exit and through the fast section, particularly in sector three. That does not make it a universally better option: its usefulness depends on how much grip the motorcycle already generates and how it manages the tyres.
Honda faced the opposite compromise
The Honda RC213V was described as producing less grip than the Ducati Desmosedici. In that context, the extra rear grip from the soft compound placed less stress on the front tyre, while also giving Honda riders the traction they needed over the short Sprint distance.
Marini said the soft rear can reduce stability on corner exit and at high speed. As it wears, the bike moves more on corner exit and loses some acceleration. That trade-off is easier to accept over 13 laps than over a full-distance race, where maintaining performance to the finish becomes more important.
The Sprint-versus-race distinction
Marini’s explanation connects tyre strategy directly to the characteristics of each motorcycle. Honda riders would use the soft rear for the Sprint, but the medium for the full-distance race. The logic is straightforward: the soft offers the necessary initial grip, while the medium should preserve performance more effectively as the race progresses.
Misano therefore provided a useful reminder that tyre selection cannot be judged by compound name alone. The same rear tyre can solve a grip shortage for one manufacturer while creating a stability or front-load problem for another.
