Ducati considers Viñales for a 2027 MotoGP test role
Mauro Grassilli confirms discussions with the 10-time MotoGP winner, but no agreement has been reached.

Ducati is considering Maverick Viñales for its MotoGP test programme in 2027. Sporting director Mauro Grassilli said at the Australian Grand Prix that the possibility is being discussed, although no agreement has been reached. The move could keep the 10-time MotoGP race winner within the paddock even though he will not be on the 2027 race grid.
Ducati is looking for a rider to work alongside Michele Pirro. Nicolo Bulega filled that role beside Pirro in 2026, but will take up a VR46 race seat in 2027. Grassilli stressed Ducati’s high regard for Viñales, while presenting the idea as an ongoing discussion rather than a completed transfer.
Viñales keeps his options open
Viñales became linked with Ducati after meeting Davide Tardozzi in the paddock. Tardozzi played down the significance of that encounter in Indonesia, explaining that he has maintained a good relationship with the Spaniard over the years. Viñales’ hopes of staying with KTM also came to an end after his relationship with the manufacturer deteriorated.
Viñales had previously questioned whether a test-rider position would provide the fulfilment he wants. He now says he does not want to disappear from MotoGP and will assess the opportunities that could keep him connected to the championship. His immediate priority, however, is recovering from his shoulder condition.
The Spaniard linked his performance at Phillip Island to his physical state. At a circuit where he is usually very fast, a lack of pace tells him that he is not yet back to his best condition. Once his shoulders recover, he does not rule out returning to racing in the following years. For now, the Ducati position remains a 2027 possibility, not a completed deal.
