WorldSBK Estoril: Bulega wins Race 2 and sets a new record
Nicolo Bulega won at Estoril, while Alvaro Bautista’s late crash handed Alberto Surra the final podium place.

Nicolo Bulega won WorldSBK Race 2 at Estoril, taking his 29th victory of the season in the final race of the weekend. The event formed the closing race of round 11, the penultimate round of the championship. It was also Bulega’s 10th triple of the season and 12th of his career, figures described as a new record.
Iker Lecuona kept the leader within reach during the opening phase, staying less than one second behind Bulega for the first five laps. The gap subsequently grew, leaving Lecuona almost five seconds adrift at the finish in second place. Bulega’s victory added another five points to his advantage over Lecuona in the standings, taking his total to 664. That points haul is described as the most successful season in WorldSBK history.
Third place changed hands late in the race. Bautista held the position with five laps remaining and had started to edge away from Alberto Surra, but he crashed at Turn 1. Surra moved into the vacant podium position and held it through to the chequered flag.
Yari Montella finished fourth, his best result of the Estoril weekend, while Axel Bassani completed the top five. Lorenzo Baldassarri, Garrett Gerloff, Miguel Oliveira, Xavi Vierge and Jake Dixon followed. Alex Lowes retired after a crash, and Sam Lowes finished 15th. The result also strengthened Montella’s position in the fight for third in the championship: he is now 53 points ahead of Alex Lowes, with 62 points still available.
