The 2027 Dakar Rally will move away from Saudi Arabia and return to an Europe-to-Africa format. Organizers have confirmed a European prologue followed by the main competitive section in Africa, with the relocation made necessary by armed conflicts in the Middle East. The change revives the event’s connection with the continent where the Dakar began and built much of its identity.

The opening prologue is scheduled for January 9 on European soil. Competitors will then make the sea crossing to Africa, where the first timed special stage is due to start on January 10. The rally is scheduled to finish on January 22.

Twelve African specials and over 4,000 kilometres

The African competition will comprise 12 special stages. Across those timed sections, riders, drivers and teams are expected to cover more than 4,000 kilometres. The planned structure therefore keeps the familiar sequence of a prologue followed by a concentrated run of special stages, while changing the geographical setting substantially.

The organizers have also extended the deadline for paying entry fees and completing the administrative procedures to November 16. The route is not yet fully fixed: the countries it will cross, along with the start and finish points of the individual stages, depend on the necessary permits and agreements with the governments concerned. Further details of the Europe-to-Africa route are expected shortly.
