The MotoGP title fight is entering its decisive phase with Jorge Martin and Marc Marquez separated by just two points. The final five rounds begin at Phillip Island, with markedly different stakes for the two contenders: Marquez is protecting his lead and an unbeaten record in head-to-head championship battles, while Martin is chasing Aprilia’s first premier-class crown.

Martin is already the 2024 champion with Pramac Ducati, but he now faces a seven-time MotoGP title holder and a Ducati operation that has not surrendered the riders’ championship since 2021. Marquez has had a close view of Martin’s ability. His 2024 campaign was his first with Ducati machinery after leaving Honda for Gresini. Although he rode a GP23 while Martin, Pecco Bagnaia and Enea Bastianini used factory GP24s, Marquez could study data from every Ducati rider.

Braking skill and a refusal to give ground

That comparison placed Martin among the riders who impressed Marquez most. He describes Martin as exceptionally talented and sees a riding approach that is close to his own, particularly in its focus on braking. Marquez also points out that Martin rides with his body positioned far back on the motorcycle, but considers him a fighter who refuses to yield. He acknowledged as well that Martin had endured a difficult previous season marked by numerous injuries.

Martin responded with equal respect. He regards it as an honour to fight Marquez for the championship and believes the contest makes him a better rider: beating Marquez requires him to produce his very best. Aprilia team-mate Marco Bezzecchi is the next closest challenger to the leading pair, but sits 46 points from the top. Pedro Acosta is also described as a future Ducati team-mate for Marquez, while Marquez is thought to rate the young rider’s exceptional talent highly.
