MotoGP Motegi: Marquez closes to within seven points of Martin
Marc Marquez won the Sprint to cut Jorge Martin’s advantage, while the Aprilia rider faded late and was penalised for exceeding track limits.

Marc Marquez won the Motegi Sprint and reduced Jorge Martin’s lead in the 2026 MotoGP World Championship to seven points. Martin had started from pole, but Marquez overturned that early advantage and turned Saturday’s race into a major result for the title fight. Martin still leads the championship after the Sprint at Motegi, yet the gap between the two riders is now only seven points. The victory gave Marquez the clearest gain among the leading contenders on a race day shaped by late-race problems and penalties.
Martin’s race deteriorated in the closing stages. The Aprilia rider lost pace because of tyre issues, then exceeded track limits on the final lap and was given a one-place penalty. That added another setback to a Sprint that had begun with the advantage of pole position. Marquez, meanwhile, made the most of Martin’s difficulties and converted them into a victory that brought him considerably closer to the championship leader. The seven-point margin leaves Martin ahead, but Marquez has substantially narrowed the advantage he faced before the Motegi Sprint.
The result also damaged the prospects of three other title contenders. Marco Bezzecchi finished sixth after choosing the medium rear tyre, while Pedro Acosta and Fabio di Giannantonio were both eliminated in an incident with Alex Marquez at Turn 2. Bezzecchi’s sixth place and the retirements of Acosta and di Giannantonio delivered another blow to their championship hopes. Marquez therefore emerged as the principal beneficiary of the Sprint, although the win was not enough to dislodge Martin from the top of the 2026 standings.
