MotoGP 2026: Japan GP timetable and the title battle
Motegi hosts round 16 with Martín leading the standings, Quiles facing a mathematical Moto3 opportunity and major rider developments.

The Japanese Grand Prix begins MotoGP 2026’s Asian tour and forms round 16 of the championship. Fifteen Grands Prix have been completed, leaving seven rounds —provided the Qatar GP takes place— over a span of only nine weeks. The title race therefore enters a compressed final phase, with Jorge Martín arriving at Motegi 12 points clear at the top of the standings.
Martín reclaimed the lead in Austria, winning the Sprint before taking second in the main race. Marc Márquez is still in contention, although his second place on Saturday was followed by fifth on Sunday after a brake problem. Marco Bezzecchi is 42 points off the lead and completes the leading group of title contenders.
Pedro Acosta sits fourth in the standings, 72 points behind Martín, after claiming his first premier-class victory in Austria. He is expected to move to Ducati’s factory team next season after leaving KTM. Maverick Viñales returns at Motegi after missing four Grands Prix with a shoulder injury. Joan Mir, meanwhile, will miss both the Japanese and Indonesian rounds on medical advice, while a definitive diagnosis for his problems is still unavailable.
Quiles has a mathematical Moto3 opportunity
Máximo Quiles could become the first 2026 champion if the required results fall into place at Motegi. The Murcia rider took his ninth win of the season in Austria and leads Carpe by 131 points, with a 132-point advantage over both Almansa and Uriarte. To secure the championship, he must extend those margins by 19 points over Carpe and by 18 over Almansa and Uriarte. His own victory is therefore not enough on its own; the contenders behind him must also lose a substantial number of points.
The Moto2 fight is closer. Izan Guevara’s Austrian win reduced the gap to championship leader Manu González, but González still holds a 35.5-point advantage with seven races remaining.
