Marquez: Valencia 2013 was my most pressured Sunday
Marc Marquez is tied with Jorge Martin at the top of MotoGP, but sees a wider title fight ahead of the Red Bull Ring.

Marc Marquez will enter a grand prix weekend as MotoGP’s championship leader for the first time this season. He and Jorge Martin are level on points, with Marquez ahead only because he has more race victories. Eight planned events remain, but Marquez does not view the championship as a contest limited to those two riders. In his assessment, Marco Bezzecchi and the other contenders are close enough to keep the outcome open.
Marquez’s own experience of a high-pressure title finale dates back to 2013. As a rookie, he secured the first of his seven premier-class championships in a season decided at Valencia against Jorge Lorenzo. Marquez still singles out that race as the moment when he felt the greatest pressure of his career. Lorenzo moved into the lead and reduced the pace in an effort to intensify the situation, but the tactic did not alter the eventual course of the title fight.
Even so, Marquez says pressure generally works in his favour. He explains that greater demands tend to make him feel comfortable and bring an additional level of concentration. Leading the standings will not materially change his approach this weekend, according to the rider. He intends to keep working in the same way, take the season one race at a time and give his maximum effort.
A favourable setting for Ducati
The next round is at the Red Bull Ring, where Ducati has built a strong recent record. Marquez won both races at the circuit last season, while Ducati has taken 10 of the last 12 MotoGP victories there. Marquez frames the weekend as a chance to enjoy the process rather than as a reason to alter his method, while acknowledging that some races will inevitably be difficult.
He also says that he is gradually reshaping his riding style around what the motorcycle requires. The changes are helping him feel increasingly comfortable, although that does not guarantee identical performance at every venue. The Red Bull Ring schedule begins with first practice on Friday morning, when Marquez’s current progress will be tested at one of Ducati’s strongest recent circuits.
