Marc Marquez has gone from 102 points behind to sharing the lead of the 2026 MotoGP standings. His Misano victory put him level with Jorge Martin, while the Ducati Lenovo Team rider now has five Grand Prix wins, the season’s leading tally according to the available evidence. The entire reversal has unfolded across seven rounds.

After Mugello, Marquez was eighth in the standings and 102 points behind Marco Bezzecchi. His difficult stretch began at Le Mans, where a crash at Turn 13 fractured his fifth metatarsal. He missed the Catalan Grand Prix altogether, then returned at Mugello and finished seventh. That was identified as the low point of his campaign, both in competitive form and in the championship table.

The change came at Balaton Park. Marquez won the Hungarian Grand Prix for his first GP victory of 2026 after a fierce contest with Pedro Acosta, then also took the Sprint to score 37 points across the weekend. Wins at Brno, the Sachsenring, Aragon and Misano followed, along with three more Sprint victories. That run removed the deficit completely.

A record still depends on the title

According to Motogp.com, winning the championship from this position would make Marquez’s 102-point recovery the biggest in MotoGP history. It would exceed Francesco Bagnaia’s 91-point comeback against Fabio Quartararo in 2022. Marquez’s own previous best recovery was a 37-point swing in 2017, so the current turnaround is far beyond his earlier benchmark.

Speaking to Motogp.com, Marquez said his outlook had changed from seeing no path to the title to recognising a genuine chance. Davide Tardozzi offered a more cautious assessment, stressing that eight racing rounds remain and that Marquez has extensive experience in championship battles. Aprilia riders Martin and Bezzecchi now have those eight rounds to respond. The comeback is already established; whether it becomes a title will be decided later.
