Marc Marquez remains at the front of the 2026 MotoGP title race after leaving Qatar without securing the championship. Two rounds are still to come, and the reigning champion holds a 60-point advantage. His next chance will arrive before the Portimao Grand Prix itself is complete, with the Sprint offering the first opportunity to close out the season.

Marco Bezzecchi’s victory in Qatar preserved a mathematical title path for the top three riders. Bezzecchi trails Marquez by 74 points, exactly the number of points still available through the end of the season. The championship therefore remains open in strictly mathematical terms, although Marquez has retained a substantial cushion at the front.

Bezzecchi’s route to the title is extremely narrow. He would have to win each of the four remaining races while Marquez collects no further points. The more immediate contest is for second place: Bezzecchi now has a realistic opportunity to overhaul Jorge Martin in the final championship order after his Qatar win.

Marquez’s next match point comes in Saturday’s Portimao Sprint. Victory there would deliver his 10th world title. That gives the next round two clear storylines: whether Marquez can finish the championship early, and whether Bezzecchi can turn his Qatar result into a successful challenge to Martin for runner-up status.
