Marc Marquez retakes MotoGP lead after Phillip Island Sprint
Victory at Phillip Island and Jorge Martin’s crash have reshaped the top of the 2026 championship standings.

Marc Marquez has retaken the lead of the 2026 MotoGP World Championship by winning Saturday’s Phillip Island Sprint. His victory came alongside a crash for Jorge Martin, changing the shape of the championship battle before Sunday’s Grand Prix.
Martin will start Sunday’s Grand Prix ten points behind Marquez. Marco Bezzecchi is third in the standings, 50 points away from the lead. Bezzecchi is Martin’s Aprilia teammate and remains mathematically eligible for the title.
The Sprint also ended Alex Marquez’s championship hopes in mathematical terms. He finished second but is now out of contention for the title. Seven riders remain in the championship fight, with up to 173 points still available. Marquez therefore carries a ten-point advantage into the Grand Prix, although the final outcome of the title remains undecided.
