Jorge Martin will miss Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix after crashing in the Phillip Island sprint. Medical checks at the circuit found a fracture of his right radius and a suspected fracture of the right ulna at the distal end. The Aprilia rider will go to Melbourne for further examinations before deciding how to proceed over the next few days.

Martin had started fourth and moved into second at the beginning of the 13-lap sprint. He then joined Marc Marquez in the fight for the lead, but lost control at the fast right-hand Turn 8 on lap eight while running second. The crash sent him rolling violently through the gravel, and marshals carried him away from the scene on a stretcher.

After Aprilia’s announcement, Martin said that he was safe and that being alive was the most important thing. He called the accident bad and dangerous, while also expressing relief that, in his view, nothing more serious had happened. He will now undergo further checks in Melbourne and assess the next steps for the coming days.

A sudden shift in the title race

Martin had arrived at Phillip Island with a two-point advantage over Marquez in the championship. Marquez’s sprint victory reversed that position: the Ducati rider now leads by 10 points. Australia is the opening event in a three-race sequence that continues with Malaysia and Qatar, making Martin’s medical assessment an important factor in the next phase of the season.
