Marco Bezzecchi heads to the Malaysian Grand Prix 50 points behind Marc Marquez in the MotoGP standings. His title challenge has lost momentum, but the Aprilia rider has not written it off. His own assessment, however, is more cautious than Davide Tardozzi’s public optimism.

Ducati team manager Davide Tardozzi said at Phillip Island that Bezzecchi could not be excluded from the championship fight and had the potential to win every race through the end of the season. Bezzecchi said he appreciated that backing, while making clear that “50 points are 50 points” rather than zero. Closing the gap, he added, will not be easy.

At Sepang, Bezzecchi’s priority is to avoid giving away more points, stay competitive in every session and fight for strong positions. Marc Marquez remains an obvious title rival, but Bezzecchi also stressed that Jorge Martin should not be overlooked. He considers Martin fast despite the injury he is dealing with.

A cautious approach to Sepang

Sepang is not an obvious confidence-builder for Bezzecchi. He has struggled at the circuit before, and it has not been one of Aprilia’s strongest venues. His expectations for the weekend are therefore restrained. Before thinking too far ahead, he wants to get on the motorcycle and understand how it feels on this track.

There is at least one encouraging reference point: Bezzecchi described Aprilia’s winter test this season as much better than the previous year. He also warned that test form and a race weekend are different matters. Last season, he won in Portugal and Valencia and finished third in the championship. With Martin dealing with injury, Bezzecchi may be Aprilia’s strongest hope for this year’s title, but Sepang will first test whether that challenge can regain momentum.
