Acosta enters the title picture after Austrian MotoGP win
Pedro Acosta claimed his first MotoGP victory at the Red Bull Ring, while Jorge Martin retook the championship lead and identified the KTM rider’s advantage.

Pedro Acosta claimed his first MotoGP race victory at the Red Bull Ring after Jorge Martin led the Austrian Grand Prix for its opening eight laps. The KTM rider eventually moved ahead, finishing 1.017 seconds clear of Martin. Despite losing the race win, the Aprilia rider left Austria back at the top of the championship standings.
Acosta’s result followed Martin’s Sprint victory on Saturday, when the KTM rider made a late mistake. Speaking to Crash.net, Martin pointed to braking for Turn 3 as the clearest area of difference, with Turn 5 another important point. He said the two bikes were fairly similar around the rest of the track, while Acosta was exceptional through the second sector. That makes the result less a story of a universal performance gap than of a few decisive sections.
The championship picture
Martin now leads Marc Marquez by 12 points, while the Ducati rider finished fifth in Austria. Martin said the championship lead can change and suggested that Acosta could become part of the title fight if he continues to win with the speed and dominance shown at the Red Bull Ring.
Acosta is fourth in the world championship, 72 points behind Martin, heading into the Japanese round, the first flyaway event. Martin said he feels strong and believes he can maintain a good level for the rest of the season, while accepting that some races will be more difficult. Austria therefore changed the competitive balance in two ways: Martin recovered the points lead, and Acosta supplied a new threat to the riders ahead of him.
