Vespa Primavera wins EU protection for its distinctive shape
The EUIPO has registered the Primavera’s design as a three-dimensional trademark, covering the scooter and scale models across all 27 EU countries.

The Vespa Primavera has secured protection against imitation and clone designs across all 27 European Union countries. Visordown reports that Piaggio, Vespa’s owner, confirmed the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) has recognised the scooter’s form and styling as a protected three-dimensional trademark.
The registration concerns the two-wheeler’s design itself. It does not cover lettering or the Vespa logo, so the ruling is focused on the visual identity of the vehicle rather than every element associated with the brand. The registration also applies to scale models, alongside the full-size two-wheeler.
EU-wide protection follows earlier registrations in Italy in February 2024 and the United Kingdom in November 2025. The decision gives Piaggio a broader basis for challenging designs that imitate the Primavera’s recognisable appearance within the EU.
Room for future Primavera variants
The ruling also addresses how the range can change over time. According to Piaggio, the EUIPO confirmed that a later Primavera variant can be treated as an evolution of an earlier model and remain protected, provided it retains the distinctive features that define the design. That leaves room for development, but not for changes that remove the characteristics on which the registration is based.
In its ruling, the EUIPO referred to Vespa’s presence in the two-wheeler market in Europe and worldwide for more than 70 years. It said that this long history has made the design immediately recognisable to target consumers as indicating a particular commercial origin, even though the appearance has changed over the years. The authority’s reasoning was that those revisions have not removed the design’s essential characteristics or distinctive core.
Vespa is part of the Piaggio Group, whose other companies include Aprilia, Moto Guzzi and Derbi.
